Volunteering: Passion and Purpose

Doctors Care is grateful for the diverse and talented crew of volunteers who assist with a variety of tasks and projects to keep things running smoothly. Their vital support enhances our ability to serve our patients and clients. Last summer, we were fortunate to welcome a couple of energetic college students, including Claire, a pre-med major. Here, she shares her experience volunteering for Doctors Care.

Last summer I had the opportunity to volunteer at the front desk of Doctors Care. Among other administrative duties, I was responsible for greeting patients as they came in to the clinic. Quite frankly, when I first started volunteering at Doctors Care, I viewed the opportunity as just another activity to add to my resume as I began thinking about my application to medical school. What I didn’t realize was how much more I would take away from my summer at the clinic than just a resume builder.

The friendly staff greeted me warmly each day I arrived at Doctors Care. Hearing their inspiring stories about the patients and families they serve gave me a deep appreciation for the care and support that Doctors Care provides. The mission of Doctors Care is to provide access to health care for people in need. Seeing this mission in action was truly an amazing experience. I was impressed by the passion, dedication, and unwavering affection that everyone at Doctors Care has for the work they do. I enjoyed being surrounded by a team of kind and caring people whose primary motivation is to help others. It was clear that the volunteers and staff view their role at Doctors Care as not just a job, but instead as a privilege. I was no exception.

I learned so much more at Doctors Care than just basic administrative skills. I took away a sense of purpose along with an appreciation for the great services available at Doctors Care to help the underserved. The mission of Doctors Care is carried out every day by a team of amazing people, both staff and volunteers. My time at Doctors Care allowed me to participate in this vital work. I feel extremely honored to have been part of such a wonderful place so dedicated to the community and those they serve.
