Dr. Mary Laird Warner is Chief Medical Officer of HCA HealthONE Swedish.  Dr. Warner practiced as a pulmonary and critical care medicine specialist at Swedish for over two decades.  She served as Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit and oversaw the transition to a closed unit with expansion from 32 to 68 beds including a neurocritical care unit and burn unit.  She held numerous medical staff leadership positions culminating in Medical Staff President.

Dr. Warner served for two years as Swedish’s first Associate Chief Medical Officer and then as Chief Medical Officer at North Suburban Medical Center, now Mountain Ridge.  There she led quality initiatives to improve PCI mortality, lower device-related infections and improve patient experience, and she restructured the medical staff peer review process.

Dr. Warner returned to Swedish as Chief Medical Officer in May 2024.  Since returning, she has focused on stabilizing the hospitalist program, improving throughput, and re-establishing quality initiatives to reduce mortality and hospital-acquired infections.  She has partnered with medical staff leaders to integrate physicians in safety event reporting and review.  She oversaw the successful biennial ACS recertification of our level 1 trauma program.

Prior to her administrative roles with HCA, Dr. Warner held academic appointments at National Jewish Health as an Associate Professor of Critical Care and Pulmonary Medicine and at the University of Colorado School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine.  At Swedish, she developed the curriculum for medical ICU rotations for family medicine, internal medicine and general surgery residents.  She also served as site investigator for multiple clinical trials with ARDSnet and PETALnet.

A native of Nashville, TN, Dr. Warner received her Bachelor of Arts in art history from Princeton University and earned her medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, after which she relocated to Colorado for a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital. She has been a Coloradoan ever since!

Dr. Warner serves on the medical advisory board of Donor Alliance and the American Lung Association of Colorado.  She is past president of the Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association and the Harpeth Hall School National Advisory Council.

Dr. Warner is married with two adult sons and enjoys skiing, snowshoeing and gardening. Her love of gardening inspired her to create an ICU garden at Swedish that is enjoyed by colleagues and patients.
