What is Public Charge? Should I be worried about it?
In immigration, public charge describes a person who might rely on the government for financial, housing, or food assistance, or for health care.
If the government decides that a person is a “public charge,” their application to enter the US, or to get a green card, may be denied.
Public charge does not apply to US citizens or individuals applying for:
- Temporary Protected Status
- U or T Visas
- Asylum
- Refugee Status
- Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
- Individuals renewing a green card or applying for citizenship.

A mixed plan household refers to a family where different members are enrolled in different types of health coverage plans. This can happen when individuals within the same household qualify for different programs based on factors like age, immigration status, or income. For example, some family members might be covered by Medicaid, while others might need to enroll in a private health insurance plan through the Marketplace or a program like OmniSalud.
